THE SMALL-BUSINESS HIRING GUIDE

Before you look for a person, write down the work.

A practical role brief for a care operator, carrier, household or growing remote team.

Practical guidance for the pilot. Not legal, tax, medical or compliance advice.

Name the problem first

Write down what is not getting done today. Is it answering inquiries, covering a shift, coordinating loads or keeping records organized? Turn the problem into a short list of responsibilities rather than an inflated job title.

Describe a normal week

List working hours, location, reporting contact, tools and the decisions the person will make. For local work, describe travel expectations and the workplace. For remote work, describe time-zone overlap and response expectations. Avoid advertising flexibility you cannot actually offer.

Separate essential from teachable

Identify requirements that are genuinely necessary before starting, and which skills you can teach. For roles requiring credentials, state the exact credential and plan how to check it. Do not treat every preference as a screening rule.

Agree on a compensation range

Set a budget before interviewing. Specify currency, pay period and what is included. Consider training, equipment, payroll administration and any jurisdiction-specific costs with your advisers. A comparable total-cost view is more useful than an isolated wage number.

Use the same scorecard

Ask candidates a consistent set of role-relevant questions. Compare evidence against the actual work rather than how polished a profile looks. Record uncertainty and follow up instead of filling gaps with assumptions.
