WORKING ACROSS BORDERS

Give your first remote hire a clear first week.

An onboarding checklist built around access, expectations and communication.

Practical guidance for the pilot. Not legal, tax, medical or compliance advice.

Resolve the engagement before the start date

Agree on the arrangement, responsibilities, payment process, schedule and applicable policies before work begins. Get appropriate local advice on classification, payroll and cross-border requirements. Working remotely does not remove those questions.

Make access deliberate

Prepare a separate account for each worker. Give only the access needed for the role and document how access will be removed. Use approved devices and security settings appropriate to the data. Never share a general-purpose password simply because it seems easier.

Show one complete task

Choose a realistic, low-risk task and document what a good result looks like. Demonstrate it, let the worker repeat it, then review together. For billing or sensitive workflows, use synthetic examples until access and training are appropriately approved.

Set an explicit communication rhythm

Choose a short check-in time, a primary channel and an escalation path. Make the expected time-zone overlap visible to both sides. Separate urgent issues from routine updates so “available” does not mean constantly interrupted.

End the week with feedback

Ask what was unclear, what is blocking progress and what support is missing. Review completed work against the agreed expectations. Refine the instructions and next week’s goals instead of expecting the worker to guess how your business operates.
