A clearer driver introduction starts with a clearer assignment.

Describe the actual driving work

Specify the equipment, route pattern, schedule, reporting contact and expected duties. A box-truck assignment is not the same conversation as an interstate tractor-trailer role. Explain loading responsibilities, overnight expectations and how changes are communicated. Give applicants enough context to decide whether the work matches their experience and availability.

Make compensation understandable

Explain the proposed pay structure, payment schedule and how relevant waiting time, extra work or expenses are handled. Discuss the actual arrangement rather than relying on labels. Obtain appropriate advice about employment classification and the requirements that apply to your operation. A clear conversation should happen before an assignment, not after a disputed settlement.

Distinguish references from qualification records

For operations and drivers subject to the applicable federal rules, FMCSA’s Safety Planner describes driver qualification-file requirements, including employment applications and specified investigations and records. (FMCSA driver qualification-file guidance)

Check which rules apply to your operation

Use the relevant regulator and a qualified compliance professional to establish the requirements for the vehicle, role and jurisdiction. Do not infer compliance from a platform profile, a reference response or a licence photograph. Backed Hire does not replace driver qualification files, motor-vehicle-record checks or other required carrier processes.

Ask about practical situations

Use job-relevant questions about communication, schedule changes, inspections or unfamiliar instructions. Ask the candidate to explain their own responsibilities in previous work without disclosing confidential customer details. Where an assessment is appropriate, carry it out through a lawful and safe process with the correct supervision and coverage.

Prepare the handoff

Before the first assignment, explain contacts, reporting tools, escalation routes and the documents the driver needs. Confirm that required checks and onboarding steps are complete. Drivers can introduce their experience through a free Backed Hire profile, while carriers and transport businesses can create employer accounts to begin the hiring conversation.
